SAFETY

At Welbilt, the safety and health of our employees is of paramount importance. We believe all accidents are preventable and safety is everyone’s responsibility. Our goal is zero injuries.

Our facilities and operations use proven tools and systems to identify hazards and mitigate risk. We also understand that we must learn from our past incidents and continuously review and improve our safety program. We require that all incidents be reported, recorded and investigated in order to identify the root cause and prevent recurrence.

We also expect our suppliers to commit to safety through the training and implementation of process to prevent, detect and respond to safety and health risks. Read more about the standards we expect from our suppliers in our Supplier Code of Conduct.

Recordable Incident Rate (RIR) describes the number of employees that have been involved in a recordable injury or illness per 100 full-time employees. RIR is calculated by multiplying the number of recordable cases by 200,000, and then dividing that number by the number of labor hours at the company.
Days Away, Restricted Duty and Transfer (DART)  refers to the number of lost, restricted or transferred incidents per 100 full-time employees. DART is calculated by multiplying the total number of incidents of Days Away, Restricted Duty and Transfer by 200,000, and then dividing that number by the number of labor hours at the company.

As a result of our commitment to the safety and well-being of our employees, our overall recordable incident rate has improved significantly in recent years. Our success can be attributed to Welbilt's commitment to safety at all levels of the organization. With everyone’s continued commitment, ownership and participation, our goal of zero injuries is possible.

Women in Manufacturing: Honorees and Emerging Leaders

In 2012, the Manufacturing Institute launched the STEP Ahead initiative to showcase the impact of women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Production (STEP) careers. The STEP Ahead Awards, presented during an annual gala, highlight the achievements of women in manufacturing who have demonstrated excellence and leadership. In 2019, Welbilt’s Alejandra Bonillas, a Mechatronics Engineer in Monterrey, Mexico, received an Emerging Leader STEP Ahead Award at the gala held in Washington D.C.

EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT

Welbilt strives to create a workplace where employees feel engaged—where they believe in the Company’s mission, understand their role in achieving the Company’s strategy and are passionate about the work they do. We conduct a biennial employee engagement survey to provide us with valuable insights as to employee perspectives and experiences. Following our inaugural engagement survey in 2017, we implemented new practices globally and regionally to improve communication and engagement across the organization.

Our most recent survey, conducted in May 2019, received over 80% participation rate.  

We also hold regular town-hall meetings at many of our locations not only to provide necessary updates, but to celebrate milestones in the business, recognize significant accomplishments and provide a forum for employees to communicate and engage with senior leaders.

WELBILT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Each year, we invest in our Welbilt family by awarding scholarships to children of full-time Welbilt employees. The scholarships are available to students pursuing their undergraduate studies at an accredited college or university. Award recipients are chosen based on their academic excellence and outstanding character. Since adoption of the program in 2017, we’ve awarded over $200,000 in scholarships under this program.

HEALTH WELLNESS

At Welbilt, we strive to be a great place to work, and take special care to promote well-being among our employees. One of the ways we support this effort is through an annual, voluntary employee health check. At our Thailand location, management at Welbilt Thailand unveiled Healthy Week, a program that ran during Spring 2019 consisting of various educational events and activities to promote healthcare and wellness and inspire healthier choices.
 

At Welbilt, we are committed to meeting our customers’ and stakeholders’ expectations that we supply high-quality products that are sourced and manufactured in a fair, ethical and responsible manner. But we cannot do this alone. We must work with our suppliers around the world to help them understand the crucial role they play and ensure they are equally committed.

Supplier Code of Conduct

Our Supplier Code of Conduct sets forth the standards that we expect of our suppliers. In turn, we expect our direct suppliers to apply similar standards or principles with their suppliers throughout the supply chain. Working together, we can make a difference.

Conflict Minerals

As part of our commitment to source and manufacture our products in an ethical and responsible manner, we seek to ensure that the products or components supplied to us do not directly or indirectly finance or benefit armed groups in the Democratic Republic of Congo or surrounding conflict regions. Each of our suppliers is required to ensure that parts and products supplied to Welbilt are “DRC conflict-free,” meaning that if they contain metals derived from columbite-tantalite (tantalum), cassiterite (tin), gold, wolframite (tungsten), or their derivatives (collectively “Conflict Minerals”), such Conflict Minerals either originate outside the Democratic Republic of the Congo or an adjoining country (“Covered Countries”). Alternatively, if such parts and products are sourced within the Covered Countries, they must be confirmed to be conflict-free, meaning that the minerals do not directly or indirectly finance or benefit armed rebel groups through mining or mineral trading in the Covered Countries.

In furtherance of this commitment, we manage our conflict minerals compliance program by integrating new suppliers, working with our employees to provide training and guidance, implementing reporting systems and facilitating cross-departmental communications to ensure compliance with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s reporting requirements regarding conflict minerals.

From baking cookies in support of local charities to clearing out flood-damaged homes following a national disaster, Welbilt is committed to serving and supporting the neighborhoods and communities where we live and work.

Welbilt donates new incubator kitchen to Pasco County

Pasco County’s UF/IFAS Extension is an off-campus branch of the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) and serves as a bridge between the research labs of the university and the local community by providing educational materials and programs for adults and youth. In 2019, in partnership with the Pasco Economic Development Council, Welbilt designed, donated and installed a full kitchen at the Pasco County Extension. The kitchen space is available to the public for educational as well as small business commercial use.

Welbilt volunteers at Ronald McDonald House

Each year, our Culinary Team and a group of Welbilt volunteers cook dinner at the Ronald McDonald House of Tampa Bay (“RMH”). The RMH gives families of children undergoing medical treatment the opportunity to live close to their child’s hospital at no cost. Many families travel far from home and spend several weeks or months to get necessary medical treatment for their seriously ill or injured children. Families who stay at the RMH receive home-cooked meals and private bedrooms.

In October 2018, we hosted a fundraising event for RMH in our New Port Richey, FL office. Our in-house chefs prepared a large lunch buffet for everyone in the office to enjoy in exchange for employee donations, which Welbilt generously matched. 

Delfield is a proud and long time supporter of the Special Olympics

The Special Olympics of Michigan provides year-round sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual and other disabilities. For the past 40 years, our Delfield brand has been supporting the Special Olympics of Michigan—from sponsoring the annual State Summer Games to dressing up in costumes at event. In fact, in 1986, Delfield built the Olympic torch and cauldron used for the Michigan Special Olympic Games. Delfield is proud to support this event and make a difference in its community.

Welbilt supports annual Joy of Giving event in Tampa, FL

The culinary team in New Port Richey, Florida partnered with a number of community organizations to achieve a common goal: creating 10,000 smiles for Christmas. The annual Joy of Giving event hosted at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa unites the community to provide needy children and their families with a free, day-long Christmas celebration filled with food, gifts, games and entertainment, plus the opportunity to connect with valuable services and programs. The Welbilt team arrived at Raymond James football stadium early in the morning to set up Frymaster fryers, Garland grills, Convotherm ovens, and Delfield refrigerators and holding cabinets. Soon after, our chefs began cooking thousands of hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken breasts and chicken tenders.

 said Corporate Executive Chef Rich Mathis.

  Spotlight : Hurricane Support

After Hurricane Harvey’s catastrophic impact on the states of Texas and Louisiana, Welbilt employees across the organization stepped up to help those in need.

  • Welbilt donated funds to the American Red Cross.

  • Employees who chose to volunteer their time towards disaster relief efforts were provided up to one week of paid leave.

  • A team of Welbilt employees traveled to a southern suburb of Houston to clear out flood-damaged homes, tearing out drywall and flooring, scrubbing away mold and hauling trash out.

  • Our Manitowoc facilities partnered with local business to collect and transport large trailers filled with non-perishable food, water, cleaning supplies, toiletries, first-aid kids and many other necessary supplies.

       

Delfield participates in the annual clean-up Covington Day

In 2018, employees from Delfield’s Covington facility organized a team of volunteers to help clean up roadside trash in the Covington community.  The team gathered debris and trash near the North Industrial Park where the Delfield production facility is located.

Welbilt Thailand's community support for the deaf and hearing impaired

Sote Suksa School in Prachinburi, Thailand is a free school providing education for approximately 250 students with impaired hearing and learning difficulties. The school is partially supported by government funds, but is frequently in need of additional resources.

To support the school, its students and the community, our team from the Welbilt Prachinburi factory collectively provided lunch to all the students of Sote Suksa School on February 14, 2019. They also donated school supplies as well as sponsored several scholarships for students in need.

“Through this small gesture, we at Welbilt want to show our support for our local community in Prachinburi and hope we can do more in the future,”

said Suttipong Wannawanit, General Manager at Welbilt Thailand.

Welbilt Herborn bakes Christmas treats for a good cause

Getting into the festive spirit, the Welbilt team in Herborn, Germany put their baking skills to very good use this past December. A team of volunteers baked a variety of cookies to sell at local farmers and Christmas markets. All proceeds went to the non-profit organization Otfried-Preußler-Förderschule, a school supporting the mental, physical and motor development of special needs children, in Dillenburg (a neighboring town of Herborn).

Students of the Otfried-Preußler-Förderschule school joined Welbilt volunteers for a morning of baking. On the menu? Delicious Christmas cookies! The kids were surprised by an early visit from Santa Claus who brought along presents and put smiles on their faces.

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY 
REFRIGERANTS

We use environmentally friendly refrigerants such as R290 in Delfield and Manitowoc Ice products. A natural, propane grade refrigerant, R290 is more energy efficient than other refrigerants and can save up to 40% more energy compared with other hydro-fluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants.
 

RESTRICT HAZARDOUS 
SUBSTANCES

We restrict the use of hazardous substances such as lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and diphenyl ether (PBDE) to reduce our impact on the environment. We aim to comply with all applicable regional and international policies regarding the use of hazardous substances. 
 

ISO
CERTIFIED

Certain of our manufacturing facilities have earned ISO 9001 certifications. These international standards reduce costs, minimize waste and increase productivity.  In addition, our Eglfing, Germany and Sheffield, United Kingdom facilities are each certified in compliance with ISO 14001 standards.

LIFECYCLE 
MANAGEMENT

We understand that full lifecycle equipment management reduces the impact on the environment. We aim to use recycled materials for manufacturing, packaging and/or delivery processes and to help customers recycle and dispose of equipment responsibly.


Spotlight: Convotherm Elektrogeräte wins the 2017 Lean & Green Management Award

ConvothermLeandConvotherm boasts a long history of conscientiously pursuing high-quality and environmentally-responsible practices. In 1995, Convotherm received its ISO 9001 certification, followed by ISO 14001 certification in 2000, making Convotherm one of the first companies in Germany to successfully comply with the environmental standard. In 2010, we saw yet another milestone, with the production plant in Eglfing meeting all its heating needs through a nearby biomass heating plant cooperative.  This remarkable achievement was surpassed in 2012 when Convotherm started using predominantly  renewable energy sources and reduced its annual CO2 emissions by nearly 1 million kg as a result. And most recently, in August 2015, Convotherm was successfully certified in conformity with the ISO 50001 energy management standard.

As part of Convotherm’s commitment to further protect the environment, Convotherm has incorporated its extensive know-how in the areas of energy efficiency and water consumption into its product development activities for its line of combi steamers. In fact, this has resulted in a product family characterized by exceptional sustainability: Convotherm 4, which is supplemented by a number of features including a water-saving recirculation system for cleaning and the optimized Advanced Closed System (ACS+). These measures not only help our environment, but also our customers, who are able to benefit from lower operating costs.
